I rode my horse all over the rural roads admiring so many old barns and farmhouses. Sitting on my beloved horse I took photos with the intent to capture their beauty on paper. I had taken art classes at Southeast Missouri State and had the privilege of having an incredible watercolor teacher that inspired my love of the color Payne’s Grey! It's the perfect color to use for old barn wood. I had 3 paintings due for my final and of course being the procrastinator I am, I waited to do them the night before. I got an “A” on my finals and my old barn painting was entered into the college art show. I won an award and that began my journey towards becoming an artist.
I chose watercolor as my preferred medium. The watercolor paper is hot press which has a smooth texture. This allows for thin line details to enhance my subject matter and to lay details on color wash backgrounds. The paper is already prepped and stretched and has minimal curl when soaked with water. I like to start with the center focus

I like to start with the center focus first to keep my interest peaked and then I lay in the background. I use very fine number 5/0 paint brushes to add detail and big fat number 16 brushes for color bleads and washes. The best part about painting with watercolors is that it dries quickly allowing you to continue and not have to wait till the next day and take the chance of losing your mojo.
I have always loved history and when I see an old building, farmhouse or barn, I like to imagine what life was like when they were new. The worn wood and rust create a nostalgic feeling in me, so I try to convey that in my art. Animals bring us so much joy and love with so much variety in their coats, feathers, and colors, making them so

Animals bring us so much joy and love with so much variety in their coats, feathers, and colors, making them so fun to draw. I especially enjoy painting the eyes to show the depth of their life force and communicate emotion. I put extra detail in the eyes to bring those in focus. I continue to paint to keep seeing this world in a better light and what a beautiful world we have.
